This
church is a small building of worship, built and placed
on a flat surface on a small hill in the centre of San
Sosti (Cs). In one of the archaeological excavations from
the Soprintendenza di Sibari supervised by PhD. Domenico
Marino it was discovered that this place was inhabited
in the X century BC
A room which was meant to be the kitchen, some
remains of domestic and wild animals, as well as a little
oven were identified in the levels corresponding to the
XVI – XVII centuries. The numismatic discoveries
that belong to the XIII century are similar to those found
in the archaeological site which is near it: Castello
della Rocca. The lower archaeological levels belong to
a period from High Medieval Age and the late Ancient Age
up to the Imperial Age. In the levels of the Roman Ages
(I BC – VI AC centuries) there were found several
pieces of “sigilatta” pottery of Italic, as
well as, Oriental and African origin. There were also
found some pieces of glass and mosaic that date from the
I BC – I AC centuries.
Under the stratum of the Roman Ages were
the stratum that belonged to the Greek Age (VI –
IV BC).
In
that place the pottery found is for Athenian importation
and they are part of a sacred area together with the rests
of a building. In the foundation levels two votive pits
with small pottery jugs (hydriskai, olpai and krjateriskoi)
were found and some pieces of statues of women. In this
same level painted pottery of Enotrian production in relation
to the geometrical proto from the XI – X BC centuries
were discovered.
