It
is a vast archaeological area with remains from the Neolithic
period up to the late Middle Ages. Here, in 1846, it was
found Kyniskos bronze axe-head which was made in bronze
in the VI century BC with a Greek inscription. It translates:
'I am the sacred property of Hera-in-the-plain'. From this
inscription it is assumed that there were places to worship
Hera. The axe-head is actually displayed in The British
Museum of London.
It is of great archaeological interest
and also a fine contribution to the landscape, the remains
of the Castrum Longobardo as well as the evidence of Graeco-Roman
and Byzantine presence in the place. |
